The Sports Officiating from a Powered Wheelchair (SOPW) project is a 12 month campaign run by John McIntear to promote the use of powered wheelchairs in officiating in sports.
John is a service veteran of the Royal Navy and is registered disabled and requires the use of a wheelchair as he is unable to stand or walk for any prolonged periods of time. John is an avid cricket fan and has always shown a keen interest in umpiring. Since becoming disabled he has been prevented from following this passion and so, through charitable assistance (including the Royal British Legion) has been able to obtain a modified powered wheelchair; adapted to his specific needs to enable him to continue umpiring at local cricket matches.
This has led John to enquire further as to how unique his own situation was and whether it would be possible to expand this to support other mobility impaired individuals who would be interested in following their own sports officiating goals.
The purpose of this project is to identify one or more national organisations who are prepared to support the objectives of the campaign and to hand over the administration of the project to an organisation prepared to take this on; on an ongoing basis.
